QUESTIONS

Apostille, explained plainly.

What is an apostille?

A certificate that authenticates the signature and seal on a public document so it's accepted in countries that belong to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. California documents are apostilled by the California Secretary of State; federal documents, like FBI checks, by the U.S. Department of State.

My country isn't in the Hague Convention. Now what?

You need embassy legalization — a chain of certifications ending at that country's embassy or consulate. Membership changes: Canada joined in January 2024, Vietnam in September 2026, and Thailand joins in February 2027.

Does my document need to be notarized first?

Private documents usually do. Public records like birth certificates need a recent certified copy instead. We notarize on site.

What if my document is rejected?

We review every scan free before you send it. If the California Secretary of State rejects a document we notarized, we fix it and resubmit it at no charge: nothing more to pay.

Is your office accessible?

Our office is upstairs, in Suite 206, and the building has no elevator. If stairs are difficult for you, just let us know when you arrive and we’ll happily come downstairs to meet you.

How much does it cost?

California apostilles are $135 per document, state fees included, with 3 business days processing. Rush service (2 business days, limited availability) is $225 per document. Federal documents such as FBI checks are $395, government fee included, with a realistic 12–14 business days door to door: our courier hand-delivers them to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. Embassy legalization starts at $595, and from $995 for federal documents such as FBI checks; the exact price depends on the country. Sending several? 5 or more California apostilles in one order are $120 each, 10 or more are $110 each, and 5 or more federal apostilles are $350 each.
